VINTAGE VANITY
Sometimes, love is linked to place. I traced my love of blush back to me being a little girl looking into my grandmother’s pink vanity. I always felt safe and like I belonged, which are the seeds to growing one’s legacy.
MOCHA MEMORIES
As I got older, those memories floated into my work, motivating me to write from a place of humanity for Black characters and the precious and necessary existence of our stories.
CLOUD COVER
I learned the value of the great white space ahead of me, the blank canvas that told me to follow my dreams and paint portraits where little girls looking to belong could see themselves reflected.

Proceeds will go to The Writers' Colony to support provide stipends so writers can focus on the work without the need to juggle a full or part time job.
Who is Mara Brock Akil?
Mara Brock Akil has written and produced 400+ episodes of television, leaving an immeasurable impact not only on Hollywood, but on the world for generations. Akil created the seminal television series Girlfriends, an honest exploration of the multi-faceted nature of Black womanhood, then developed the spin-off series The Game. She has since produced multiple culture shifting series that celebrate the complexity of humanity, including Love Is ___, and Being Mary Jane. She was honored with the prestigious Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award by NATPE in 2019, and inducted into Northwestern’s Medill Hall of Achievement in 2017. Other accolades include: Essence Visionary Award, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter Showrunner Power Lists and Women in Entertainment Power100. In 2020, Akil signed a deal with Netflix to produce television shows for the streaming platform under her new banner, story27 Productions, where she continues to expand her accomplished legacy. In 2021, she committed to further uplifting the talent of tomorrow by starting a non-profit writing residency, the Writers’ Colony, dedicated to the burgeoning Black talent of today.
